Riyadh: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Saudi Arabia, signalling a renewed push to strengthen security cooperation with Gulf nations. The visit has come after Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine’s growing capabilities in drone technology as a potential asset for regional defence.
The proposal has centred on Ukraine’s battlefield-tested drone systems, which Zelenskyy has said could help improve security across the Gulf. Zelenskyy emphasised that Ukraine has developed not only advanced drone technology but also practical experience in deploying it alongside radar systems, aviation and integrated air defence networks.
Zelenskyy has linked this cooperation to broader global stability, noting that energy security and cost of living, particularly in Europe, depend heavily on stable oil and gas supplies from the region. By offering drone expertise, Ukraine has aimed to contribute to protecting critical infrastructure and shipping routes.

At the same time, Zelenskyy has indicated that Ukraine is seeking support in return, particularly in strengthening its own defence capabilities amid the ongoing war with Russia. Discussions have included the possibility of acquiring air defence missiles from Middle Eastern countries, which Ukraine currently lacks in sufficient quantities.
Interest in Ukrainian defence technology has been growing among Gulf states. Ukrainian firms specialising in anti-drone and electronic warfare systems have reported approaches from countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, although exports remain subject to government approval.
The visit has also taken place against a shifting global security landscape, with reports suggesting that the United States may redirect some military resources from Ukraine to the Middle East due to escalating tensions involving Iran. This has increased the urgency for Ukraine to secure alternative partnerships, making the proposed drone cooperation with Gulf nations a strategically significant development.
