Kuala Lumpur: Google will invest $15 billion in Malaysia between 2027 and 2028, funding expansion of its data centre infrastructure, clean energy development, water security, and workforce skills.

The investment will include the development of new data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, adding to Google’s first campus at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, which is already operational.

Alphabet and Google’s President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat stated that the investment supports Malaysia’s development priorities by providing the computing infrastructure needed to expand innovation, while increasing local power and water resources as the company’s operations grow.

Google estimates that construction of the campuses will contribute an average of $1.1 billion annually to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and create more than 37,000 local jobs each year.

Once operational, the facilities are expected to support more than 9,000 local jobs annually, with average wages projected to be 45 percent higher than the national median.

As part of its sustainability plans, Google will add more than 1 gigawatt of clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s national electricity grid. The company noted that it would pay for all the electricity consumed by its data centre campuses, along with the direct infrastructure costs needed to connect them to the grid, while complying with local regulations.

Google also highlighted that the Malaysian campuses would operate with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of between 1.12 and 1.14, reflecting their planned energy efficiency.

In addition to infrastructure investment, the company announced four new programmes designed to improve digital and professional skills among Malaysians. The initiatives aim to upskill 800,000 people over the next five years.
