Mumbai: Godrej Consumer Products shares have fallen sharply after Sudhir Sitapati, CEO of Godrej resigned with immediate effect, raising concerns among investors over the sudden leadership change.

The stock dropped as much as 10 percent on August 10 to its lowest level in more than 3 years. Shares were last down 8.96 percent at 932.90 rupees ($9.73; £7.26) as of 9:24 a.m. IST.

The decline follows Sitapati’s unexpected departure from the consumer products company. Sitapati resigned on August 10 with immediate effect. The resignation came only months after Sitapati had been reappointed as chief executive.

The timing of the departure added to investor concerns over the company’s leadership and future direction. The company board had been discussing an extension to Sitapati’s tenure when the resignation was submitted.

Sitapati’s resignation creates uncertainty around the leadership of Godrej Consumer Products at a time when investors are assessing the company’s outlook. The sharp movement in the share price reflects the immediate market response to the leadership announcement.

The stock’s decline pushes shares to their weakest level in more than 3 years. The nearly 9 percent fall highlights the strong market reaction during early trading.

The company’s leadership transition is now the main focus for investors following Sitapati’s departure. The board’s earlier discussions about extending the chief executive’s tenure added to questions surrounding the sudden decision.

The market reaction underlines investor sensitivity to unexpected changes at senior management level. Further attention is expected to remain on how the Godrej Consumer Products addresses the leadership change following Sitapati’s immediate resignation.
