Apple Music Hall to open new 600-capacity venue in London

London: Apple is set to open a new 600-capacity concert venue beneath its UK headquarters at Battersea Power Station, creating a dedicated space for live performances, artist content and broadcasts on Apple Music.

The venue, called Apple Music Hall, is expected to open in the coming weeks and will host one-off performances from established recording artists as well as emerging acts. Concerts will also be filmed and streamed online, giving Apple Music subscribers access to live performances beyond the venue itself.

Oliver Schusser, Apple Music’s vice president, told BBC News that the facility has been designed with extensive audio and visual capabilities, describing it as having more cameras and speakers than any venue of a similar size.

The opening comes as London’s live music industry faces growing financial pressure. Around 45 venues closed across the capital last year, while approximately 400 clubs across Britain shut between 2020 and 2025 as rising costs and changes in post-pandemic lifestyles affected the sector.

The arrival of Apple, with its significant financial resources, could add to concerns among independent venue operators. However, Schusser said Apple Music Hall was not intended to compete directly with existing live music venues.

The company’s focus, he said, would be on working with artists, connecting them with audiences and creating content for Apple Music rather than establishing itself as a conventional live entertainment business.

The venue represents Apple’s return to London’s live music scene nine years after the company ended its iTunes Festival, which featured major artists including Lady Gaga, Elton John, Britney Spears and Adele at venues such as Koko and The Roundhouse.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy welcomed the project, describing it as a vote of confidence in the UK’s creative industries and its position as a global creative centre.

Apple Music Hall has been designed as an adaptable performance space, allowing artists to stage large-scale productions as well as smaller acoustic performances. The 38-foot stage can be arranged for performances surrounded by the audience or for more traditional front-facing shows.

The venue’s interior reflects the Art Deco character of Battersea Power Station, with fluted vaults and brick-lined walls. Specially selected bricks have also been used to help control sound reflections within the space.

Alongside the concert hall, the facility includes new studios for Apple Music’s radio stations, which are moving from their current base in King’s Cross. It will also feature dedicated spaces for DJ mixes, songwriting camps and band rehearsals.

The building has been equipped with integrated audio and video infrastructure, allowing artists to record podcasts, take part in radio programmes and livestream performances from the same location.

    Focus on emerging artists

Apple hopes the new venue will help it create original music content and strengthen the connection between artists and listeners, as streaming platforms compete for audiences.

The company also plans to use the facility to give emerging artists greater exposure, particularly as listening habits increasingly favour established catalogue music.

Schusser said Apple wants its music service to offer audiences more opportunities to understand artists and the stories behind their music rather than simply providing access to songs and playlists.

The company expects the opening act for Apple Music Hall to be announced soon.
