UK schools face crackdown over branded uniform rules

This new policy limits compulsory branded uniform items and requires schools to make their uniform policies clear, accessible and transparent for parents.

London: Schools across the UK have been warned against exploiting loopholes in new uniform requirements designed to reduce the cost of school clothing for families.

The new rules come into effect from this term and limit the number of branded uniform and PE kit items that schools can require parents to purchase.

    Key uniform rules:

    • Primary schools: Must limit compulsory branded uniform and PE kit items to three or fewer.
    • Secondary and middle schools: Must limit compulsory branded items to four or fewer, including a tie where one is required.
    • Uniform policies: Must be published on the school’s website and made available to all parents, including those considering enrolling their children.
    • Clear information: Policies must be easy to understand and clearly identify which uniform items are compulsory and which are optional.

The government has told schools to follow both the wording and the intention behind the rules. The warning follows reports that some UK schools have described items such as jumpers as optional, potentially allowing them to avoid counting them towards the limit despite students being expected to wear them during colder weather.

Education Secretary Lucy Powell said that families should not be priced out of education because of a school’s choice of uniform supplier or demands for branded clothing.

Powell added that the government had been clear that UK Schools could require no more than three branded items for primary pupils and four for secondary pupils, with no exceptions. Powell also warned that authorities would intervene if schools attempted to find ways around the requirements.

The changes follow a survey of 1,000 parents with school-age children conducted earlier this summer, which found that 48 percent did not know the new uniform rules were being introduced.

The government says the measures are intended to help families manage school-related costs while ensuring schools maintain clear and transparent uniform policies.
