Parents divided as new school uniform rules take effect

The reform aims to make school uniforms more affordable by reducing the number of compulsory items that carry school logos or branding.

London: Nearly half of parents remain unaware of new school uniform rules that will come into effect in September, despite the changes being introduced to help families manage rising education costs.

From next month, most schools will only be permitted to require parents to purchase a maximum of three branded uniform items per child. The reform aims to make school uniforms more affordable by reducing the number of compulsory items that carry school logos or branding.

However, a survey of 1,000 parents of school-age children found that 48 percent had not heard about the upcoming changes. The findings, published by advice platform Money Wellness, also showed that parents are divided over whether the new rules will make a significant difference to their expenses.

While 61 percent of parents believe limiting branded uniform requirements will help them save money, nearly one-third (30 percent) do not expect to see any reduction in costs.

School uniforms and supplies remain a major annual expense for many households, prompting experts to share practical ways for families to make clothing last longer and reduce spending.

    Tips for parents

Parenting coach Isobel Mary Champion suggested several tips to extend the lifespan of school uniforms:

    • Avoid tumble drying uniforms: Drying clothes on a line where possible can help prevent fabrics from becoming worn, bobbly or damaged. Parents should also avoid washing uniforms with bulky items such as towels, which can increase wear.
    • Wash uniforms only when needed: Many uniform pieces, especially during cooler months, can be worn more than once before washing. Reducing unnecessary washes can help preserve fabric quality.
    • Use second-hand uniform options: Many schools organise ‘nearly new’ sales where parents can buy or sell good-quality used uniforms. This provides a more sustainable and affordable alternative to purchasing everything new.
    • Buy non-branded items from cheaper retailers: While branded items with school logos may need to be purchased from official suppliers, everyday items such as shirts, trousers, skirts and shorts can often be found at lower prices elsewhere.
    • Repair small damages quickly: Fixing loose buttons, minor tears and fallen hems early can prevent further damage and help extend the life of uniforms.
    • Change out of uniforms after school: Encouraging children to remove their uniforms after returning home can reduce damage caused by play, spills and everyday activities.

The new rules are expected to bring some relief to families, but awareness among parents remains a key challenge before the changes take effect.
