California: WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that will allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. Instead, people will be able to connect using unique usernames, giving users greater control over their privacy while using the messaging platform.
The feature will be rolled out gradually to WhatsApp’s three billion users worldwide over the coming months. Beginning Monday, users can reserve a unique username through the app, although creating one will remain optional. Existing phone numbers will still be required to create and maintain a WhatsApp account.
Once the feature becomes available to everyone, users will be able to start conversations simply by exchanging usernames. Phone numbers will no longer need to be shared for chats, while existing privacy tools such as blocking and reporting unwanted contacts will continue to be available.
your phone number is personal and sometimes you want to connect without handing it over. that's why we're introducing usernames for WhatsApp.
starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch the feature. It takes just a few seconds, make sure…

Usernames can contain up to 35 characters and may be changed or removed at any time. WhatsApp said certain names linked to high-profile public figures and celebrities will be protected to prevent impersonation. The platform also confirmed there will be no public directory where usernames can be searched.
The company described usernames as a major privacy improvement. According to WhatsApp, many users prefer not to reveal their personal phone numbers, particularly in community groups or when communicating with people they do not know well. The new system is designed to offer greater flexibility while maintaining secure communication.
Privacy experts welcomed the added protection but noted that WhatsApp still collects metadata, such as information about who users contact and when messages are exchanged. While message content remains protected by end-to-end encryption, metadata continues to support some of Meta’s advertising services. The username feature is expected to become available globally over the next few months.
