UK braces for dense fog after storms claim three lives

The UK is forecast to see drier conditions over the next 48 hours, but dense fog could disrupt travel, particularly across southern and central England on Thursday.

England: The UK is expected to experience calmer weather over the next 48 hours after storms killed three people, although dense fog could cause further travel disruption and hazardous driving conditions.

Forecasters expect a significant shift in weather conditions as high pressure brings drier weather to much of the country following the impact of the first two named storms of the season, Austen and Boelo, late last week.

Two men died on October 25 after trees fell during Storm Boelo, one in his 20s in London and another aged 60 in Scotland. A woman in her 50s died on October 26 after being pulled from the sea off the Isle of Wight.

According to Met Office data, Storm Austen brought wind gusts of up to 79mph when it struck the UK on October 24, while Storm Boelo produced winds exceeding 80mph in some exposed areas.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell warned that milder conditions could bring dense, persistent fog, particularly in southern and central parts of the UK on the morning of October 29. The fog could take time to clear, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions and disrupting travel.

October 28 may remain breezy, with scattered showers before winds ease during the evening. England and Wales are expected to stay largely dry into early November, while parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland could see spells of rain.

Although most wind warnings have been lifted, people living in coastal areas have been advised to remain alert to the risk of flooding. The Met Office stated that higher pressure would bring calmer conditions to many areas, but fog could become an additional hazard as the weather settles.
