Severe storms disrupt US 250th Independence Day celebrations

Storms, extreme heat and lightning force evacuations, event cancellations and schedule changes across several US cities during Independence Day celebrations.

Washington: Severe weather disrupted celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence, with thunderstorms, lightning and record-breaking heat affecting events across the country, including the main national celebration in Washington, DC.

Thousands of people had gathered at the National Mall in the US capital for the landmark July 4 event before authorities ordered an evacuation as a powerful thunderstorm approached. The weather delay forced President Donald Trump’s keynote address to be postponed by one hour.

Despite the disruption, organisers of the Freedom 250 celebration confirmed that attendees would be allowed back into the venue once conditions improved. Trump also reassured supporters through social media, saying he would attend the event regardless of the weather and encouraging people to stay for the celebrations.

The severe weather impacted Independence Day festivities nationwide. In New York City, officials moved the start of the iconic Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks display earlier to avoid approaching storms. Fortunately, the rain held off, allowing thousands of spectators to enjoy the 30-minute fireworks spectacular.

Several cities were forced to cancel or alter their celebrations due to dangerous weather conditions. Hartford in Connecticut, along with Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre in Pennsylvania, cancelled planned events. In Boston, attendees at the city’s fireworks display and concert were briefly asked to seek shelter before festivities resumed safely.

Philadelphia also issued evacuation orders during celebrations, while Pittsburgh adjusted the timing of its fireworks display to avoid the worst of the changing weather conditions. Washington, DC, also faced extreme temperatures, with the mercury soaring to 39°C (102°F), adding to the challenges for visitors already navigating heightened security measures. The ongoing heatwave prompted the cancellation of several parades and outdoor activities across the region.

Security remained tight throughout the celebrations. Hundreds of members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front reportedly travelled to Washington, although local authorities stated they received no reports of violence during the event.

This year’s 250th Independence Day celebrations have also attracted political attention. Unlike previous presidents, who generally avoided making in-person appearances during July 4 events, President Trump has taken a central role through the Freedom 250 initiative, a government-backed programme overseeing many of the anniversary celebrations.

The Freedom 250 organisation transformed large sections of the National Mall into a ‘Great American State Fair,’ featuring a Ferris wheel, exhibitions highlighting American innovation, military displays and attractions from conservative organisations.

However, the programme has faced criticism for its political tone. Several Democratic-led states declined to participate, while some scheduled performers withdrew, expressing concerns that the celebrations had become overly partisan rather than a nonpartisan national commemoration.

The Freedom 250 initiative has also organised additional events throughout the anniversary year, including faith-based gatherings, sporting events and educational exhibits aimed at celebrating American history, although critics argue some presentations overlook issues such as slavery and racial injustice. Despite the weather-related disruptions, Independence Day celebrations continued across much of the country as millions of Americans marked the nation’s historic 250th anniversary.
