Manila: Sara Duterte is facing another impeachment battle as the Philippine House of Representatives prepares to vote on complaints seeking her removal from office.
The impeachment case marks the latest development in the growing political conflict between the Duterte family and Ferdinand Marcos Jr, whose alliance with Duterte collapsed after they won the 2022 national elections together.
The charges against Duterte include alleged violations of the constitution, betrayal of public trust, misuse of confidential government funds, failure to disclose wealth and accusations linked to threats made against President Marcos and other senior officials.
One of the most serious allegations involves financial transactions reportedly flagged by anti-money laundering authorities involving more than $110m, according to lawmakers supporting the impeachment complaint.
Supporters of the impeachment say the process is necessary to uphold accountability and transparency in government, while Duterte’s allies argue the case is politically motivated.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on whether the complaint should proceed to the Senate, where a trial would determine whether Duterte should be removed from office and permanently barred from holding future government positions.
This is the second impeachment effort against Duterte. A previous impeachment motion passed in 2025 with overwhelming support in the House but was later voided by the Supreme Court on technical grounds.
Political tensions between the Marcos and Duterte families have intensified in recent years, especially after the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte under an order linked to the International Criminal Court.
Despite the controversy, Sara Duterte has continued to maintain strong political influence and has already announced plans to contest the 2028 presidential election.
Ahead of the impeachment vote, Duterte said she would accept whatever outcome occurs, describing it as part of God’s plan. The impeachment process is expected to further deepen political divisions in the Philippines at a time when the country is also facing economic challenges and rising public uncertainty.
