London: The excessive screen time in parents has contributed to missed family time moments as persistent screen habits shift attention away from children to mobile devices.

A survey conducted for Virgin Media O2 found that 63 percent of children aged 8 to 16 think their parents are unaware of how much time they spend on screens. The findings point to a growing disconnect between parental perception and actual screen use within households.

It shows that frequent phone checking by parents reduces engagement and affects quality time spent with children daily. This screen habit adds up to more than two hours daily. Over the course of the summer holiday, the total reaches about 88 hours.

Children raised concerns about this pattern. More than half of respondents indicated that parental phone use causes missed important family moments. The findings highlight a growing gap in engagement during shared time at home.

The issue emerges at a time when attention remains focused on reducing screen time among younger users. Government efforts largely target teenagers and social media use. The survey suggests adults also contribute to excessive device use within households.

Frequent checking without purpose reflects changing digital habits. Phones stay within reach throughout the day. This reduces attention during conversations and shared activities. Small interruptions add up and affect overall family interaction.

The findings underline a broader shift in behaviour linked to constant connectivity. While digital tools offer convenience, overuse presents challenges for maintaining balance at home. Parents play a central role in setting patterns for device use.

The survey points to the need for more mindful habits. Limiting unnecessary phone use may improve engagement. Creating device-free periods during family time could help break persistent screen habits and support stronger relationships and better communication.
