Austin: Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla has signalled plans to scale back Tesla’s Cybertruck production at its Texas Gigafactory around mid-2027 to make way for increased manufacturing of the company’s autonomous Cybercab.
The planned production shift reflects Tesla’s growing focus on its robotaxi ambitions. Musk announced the expected timeline on November 6, 2026, but did not clarify whether Cybertruck manufacturing would move to another facility or end altogether. The company has yet to identify an alternative production location.
Introduced in 2023, the Cybertruck was presented as a futuristic electric pickup designed to compete with established models from traditional automotive manufacturers, including Ford. Musk positioned the vehicle as a major addition to Tesla’s electric vehicle portfolio. However, the pickup struggles to maintain consumer interest since its launch.
The vehicle also faced several challenges, including multiple recalls and quality-control issues. Tesla revises Cybertruck prices several times. Despite the initial attention surrounding its introduction, the model has not sustained the market interest the company anticipated, raising questions about its ability to maintain demand in the competitive electric pickup segment.

In contrast, the Cybercab has become central to Tesla’s longer-term plans for autonomous transportation. The company intends to make the purpose-built driverless vehicle the primary model operating across its wider robotaxi network over time.
Expanding Cybercab manufacturing therefore becomes a key priority as Tesla advances its plans for autonomous ride services. The expected reduction in Cybertruck output at the Texas Gigafactory would create additional capacity for the company to accommodate increased Cybercab production.
Musk has not disclosed further details about the production transition or confirmed whether Cybertruck manufacturing will continue at another facility. The announcement also leaves open the possibility that production could be discontinued altogether, although Tesla has not provided clarification on the model’s long-term manufacturing plans.
For now, the middle of 2027 remains the expected period for winding down Cybertruck production at the Texas facility. The shift would mark a significant change in Tesla’s manufacturing priorities as the company places greater emphasis on the Cybercab and its broader robotaxi ambitions.
