Miami: Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has been fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Soccer for violating the league’s rules prohibiting players from making contact with an opponent’s face, head, or neck.

The incident took place in the 101st minute of Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw against Philadelphia Union on Wednesday in Chester, Pennsylvania. Messi was not the only Inter Miami player disciplined over the late-game confrontation. Defender Ian Fray was also fined for the same violation after tensions escalated during second-half stoppage time.

Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan were both sent off as tempers flared in the closing moments of the match. Sullivan, however, successfully appealed his red card on August 21.

MLS’s Independent Review Panel unanimously ruled in his favour, overturning his one-match suspension and accompanying fine. The panel included representatives from US Soccer, Canada Soccer and an independent member nominated by the Professional Referee Organization.

The decision means Sullivan is available for Philadelphia’s next match against Austin FC on August 22. MLS clubs are allowed two unsuccessful appeals during a season, including the playoffs. Philadelphia has therefore retained both of its unsuccessful appeals for the 2026 season.

Elsewhere, Toronto FC defender Walker Zimmerman was fined an undisclosed amount for failing to leave the pitch promptly after receiving a red card during his team’s 3-3 home draw with Charlotte FC.

Minnesota United defender Anthony Markanich was also fined after being found in violation of MLS rules regarding simulation or embellishment during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Atlanta United.
