Nairobi: Kenyan wildlife authorities have launched an urgent investigation after 15 elephants were found dead in areas surrounding the renowned Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya over the past month.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed that veterinary experts are examining the carcasses, with tissue samples sent to laboratories to determine the cause of death. Authorities are investigating whether disease, poisoning, environmental factors or another unknown cause is responsible for the unexplained fatalities.

According to KWS, the elephant deaths were recorded between June 24 and July 24, 2026, at multiple locations located approximately 15 to 30 kilometres outside the boundaries of Amboseli National Park. Officials emphasised that none of the carcasses were found inside the protected park itself.

The carcasses include elephants of different ages and both sexes, indicating the deaths are not confined to a single herd or family group. Wildlife officials said there is currently no evidence pointing to a single cause, and investigations remain ongoing until laboratory results are available.

The Amboseli ecosystem, which stretches across the Kenya-Tanzania border, is internationally recognised for its large elephant population and diverse wildlife. Conservation efforts in the region have significantly reduced poaching over recent decades, making the latest incident particularly concerning for wildlife authorities and conservationists.

Officials noted that this is the first time in decades that such a high number of elephant deaths has been recorded within the Amboseli ecosystem over a relatively short period. The unusual mortality event has raised concerns among conservation groups, prompting increased monitoring across the region.

Data from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants shows that the Amboseli ecosystem was home to more than 2,000 elephants in 2025, making it one of Africa’s most important elephant conservation landscapes. Wildlife authorities have assured the public that investigations are being treated as a priority and that further updates will be released once laboratory findings confirm the cause of the deaths.
