Budapest: The Hungary pipeline plot has triggered heightened security concerns after Viktor Orban convened an emergency meeting of the National Defence Council. The move has followed the discovery of explosives near a pipeline carrying Russian gas into Hungary.
The explosives were found in neighbouring Serbia, close to the village of Tresnjevac in the Kanjiza district, around 20 kilometres from where the TurkStream pipeline enters Hungary. Serbian authorities reported that two bags containing explosives and detonators were recovered by the army.
Aleksandar Vucic, President of Serbia, has informed Orban about the discovery and stated that the explosives were of significant destructive capacity, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The incident has come at a politically sensitive time, with Orban’s Fidesz party trailing in opinion polls ahead of upcoming elections. Peter Magyar, Leader of Hungary’s opposition, has accused Orban of spreading fear and suggested that the situation could be politically motivated.

Security experts in Hungary have also raised concerns about the possibility of a staged operation, sometimes referred to as a false flag, potentially designed to influence public opinion or justify emergency measures.
The Hungary pipeline plot has further intensified geopolitical tensions, particularly given Orban’s alignment with Vladimir Putin and Hungary’s continued reliance on Russian energy. Hungary has continued to import significant volumes of gas through the TurkStream pipeline, estimated at between five and eight billion cubic metres annually.
Political messaging has also focused heavily on energy security, with Orban maintaining that affordable fuel and heating depend on continued access to Russian oil and gas supplies.
Tensions have also involved Ukraine, as Orban has accused Volodymyr Zelensky of contributing to disruptions in oil supply through the Druzhba pipeline. Ukrainian authorities have stated that the disruption has been caused by damage from Russian attacks and is expected to be resolved soon. The situation has remained under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm responsibility for the explosives or the intended target.
