Budapest: The Hungary election has resulted in a historic political shift as Peter Magyar secured a landslide victory, bringing an end to the 16-year rule of Viktor Orbán. Preliminary results based on more than 98 percent of votes counted have placed Magyar’s Tisza party on track to win 138 seats, far ahead of Orbán’s Fidesz party.

The outcome has reflected a strong mandate from voters, with a record turnout of 79.5 percent. Magyar has declared that the result represents a turning point, as supporters celebrated across Budapest following confirmation of the victory.

The Hungary election has been shaped by growing public dissatisfaction over issues such as corruption and governance. Magyar has spent two years building support across the country, campaigning extensively and drawing large crowds.

Orbán, who had secured four consecutive election victories, has acknowledged the defeat, describing the result as clear and difficult. The loss has marked the end of a long period of political dominance.

Magyar has pledged significant reforms, including changes to education and healthcare systems, efforts to tackle corruption, and restoring judicial independence. The Hungary election result has also positioned his party close to a two-thirds majority, which could enable constitutional changes.

The political shift has also carried international implications. Orbán’s close ties with Vladimir Putin and his stance on Russian energy had strained relations with the European Union. Magyar has indicated plans to strengthen ties with EU institutions and improve cooperation.

European leaders have reacted positively to the result, including Donald Tusk, who has welcomed the outcome and expressed support for Hungary’s new direction.

Magyar has announced plans for early diplomatic visits, including trips to Warsaw and Brussels, where discussions are expected to focus on restoring cooperation and unlocking frozen EU funds.

The Hungary election has highlighted a clear divide in public opinion, with the final result signalling a decisive shift toward change after years of entrenched political control.

The new leadership now faces the challenge of delivering on promises while managing expectations following one of the most significant political transitions in Hungary’s modern history.
