Nashville: Dolly Parton, the Queen of Country whose songs turned everyday stories into timeless classics, has died at the age of 80, ending an extraordinary career.

Parton leaves behind a career spanning more than 6 decades and more than 200 songs. Signature hits included ‘Jolene, 9 to 5’ and ‘I Will Always Love You’, later transformed into one of the world’s biggest-selling singles through Whitney Houston’s 1992 recording.

Born Dolly Rebecca Parton in a log cabin near the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children. Music shaped life from an early age through church singing and local radio appearances. At 13, Parton recorded ‘Puppy Love’ and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry, where an early meeting with Johnny Cash followed.

Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

After finishing school in 1964, Dolly Parton moved to Nashville to pursue a music career. Early success came through songwriting before a breakthrough on Porter Wagoner’s television show. The partnership produced several successful duets, although Parton later chose to build an independent career.

That decision inspired ‘I Will Always Love You’, written as a farewell to Wagoner rather than a romantic partner. Parton later made another defining business decision by refusing to give up half of the song’s publishing rights for a proposed Elvis Presley cover. The choice proved valuable when Houston’s version became a global phenomenon.

Dolly Parton continued releasing music across every decade that followed. The career included 49 solo studio albums, numerous collaborative projects and more than 200 singles. Later work expanded beyond country music, including the 2023 album ‘Rockstar,’ which featured collaborations with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Miley Cyrus.

Acting brought another chapter of success. Parton starred in ‘9 to 5’ alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin and wrote the film’s title song. Further roles included ‘Steel Magnolias and Rhinestone.’

Away from entertainment, Parton created the Imagination Library. The literacy programme has distributed more than 200 million free books to children worldwide. During the pandemic, Parton also donated $1 million (£740,000) towards vaccine research.

Parton married Carl Dean in 1966, and the relationship remained largely private until Dean’s death in 2025. Through fame, business success and countless awards, Parton never abandoned the Tennessee roots that shaped the songs.

With 10 Grammy Awards from 55 nominations and recognition as one of country music’s greatest artists, Parton leaves a legacy built on songwriting, resilience and generosity. For generations of listeners, the rhinestones and humour were unforgettable, but the songs will remain the heart of the story.

Dolly Parton leaves behind a body of work that crossed generations and genres while remaining rooted in the stories and sounds of rural Tennessee. The singer’s music, films and charitable work have secured a legacy that will continue to inspire audiences around the world.
