North America: Box breathing is gaining attention as a simple breathing technique that may help people manage stress, anxiety, and feelings of being overwhelmed. The method involves a four-step breathing pattern: inhale for four seconds, hold the breath for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, then hold again for four seconds before repeating the cycle.

Also known as square breathing, the technique can be practised for a few minutes or for longer periods, depending on individual preference. Breathwork experts recommend using it before situations that may trigger stress, such as examinations, presentations, important meetings, or other high-pressure events.

The technique has its roots in traditional breathing practices, including yoga, while controlled breathing has also been used in disciplines such as martial arts. In modern settings, box breathing has become particularly popular as a way of helping people focus their attention and regulate their response to stressful situations.

    Physiological effects of this breathing

Research is also beginning to examine its potential physiological effects. A study published in June 2026 in Comprehensive Psychoneuroendocrinology found that box breathing could help prevent significant increases in heart rate and other stress-related markers among people exposed to high-pressure situations.

One of the distinctive features of box breathing is the final breath-hold after exhaling. According to experts, this stage can increase carbon dioxide levels in the body, creating a temporary urge to breathe. Practising controlled exposure to this sensation may help people become more comfortable with changes associated with the body’s stress response.

The technique is also being incorporated into everyday routines, including during periods of difficulty sleeping or when people wake feeling anxious. Its appeal lies partly in its simplicity: it requires no equipment and can generally be practised almost anywhere.

However, breathwork is not necessarily the same for everyone. Different breathing techniques may suit different situations, and people experiencing persistent anxiety, sleep problems or other health concerns should seek appropriate professional advice.

For those looking for a straightforward way to pause during stressful moments, box breathing offers a structured method of slowing down, focusing attention, and deliberately regulating breathing.
