France government under pressure after weekend of violent unrest

More than 1,500 businesses were reportedly affected by looting as political leaders traded blame over the violence that followed protests against living costs and public services.

Paris: French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is holding crisis talks on October 19 after widespread looting and violent clashes during nationwide protests left businesses damaged and intensified pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

More than 1,500 shops and businesses were reportedly targeted during demonstrations against rising living costs and deteriorating public services. The protests drew around 550,000 people, according to the Interior Ministry, although organisers estimated turnout at more than 800,000. Authorities reported extensive property damage and injuries among security personnel.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez attempted to resign amid criticism over the authorities’ preparation for the demonstrations. Macron rejected the resignation and asked Nuñez to focus on improving public safety and ensuring those responsible for the violence are brought to justice. Opposition figures and unions have questioned whether the security response was adequate.

Macron addressed the nation on October 18, condemning the violence and calling for national unity. However, the response has faced criticism from political opponents who argue that the government has yet to outline sufficiently concrete measures to prevent further unrest or support affected businesses. Parliament’s lower-house president, Yaël Braun-Pivet, has proposed an inquiry into the events and the policing strategy.

The unrest began amid broader frustration over the cost of living, education and access to public services. Union leaders have accused the government of failing to address these concerns, while Macron and his administration have blamed radical left-wing groups and criminals for the violence. Opposition leaders on both the left and right have criticised the government’s handling of the crisis.

Authorities are now assessing damage, investigating those involved and considering how to protect towns and cities during future demonstrations. Further protests have been announced for November 5, raising concerns that tensions could persist as France approaches its next presidential election.
