New York: Novak Djokovic’s US Open campaign ended with a dramatic first-round defeat by Argentina’s Mariano Navone, with the 39-year-old visibly emotional after another physically demanding match in humid conditions.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion struggled throughout the contest and was forced to vomit into a towel bin during the match. Despite battling through the discomfort and producing the determination that has defined his career, Djokovic eventually lost 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to the world No. 49.

The defeat marked the first time Djokovic has been eliminated in the opening round at the US Open and his first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam since 2006.

Speaking after the match, Djokovic acknowledged how difficult the contest had been physically and emotionally, while congratulating 25-year-old Navone on a major victory. Djokovic managed a smile while shaking hands with his opponent but struggled to hide his disappointment as he left the court, appearing close to tears.

The result also ended his latest attempt to win a record 25th Grand Slam singles title, which would have moved him ahead of Margaret Court’s record of 24 major singles titles. The loss comes at a particularly significant point in Djokovic’s career, with opportunities to add another Grand Slam title becoming increasingly limited.

His prospects had appeared more favourable this year, particularly with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner absent because of injury and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz returning from a long-term wrist problem. Djokovic had reached at least the semi-finals at six of his previous seven Grand Slam tournaments, making his early departure in New York particularly notable.

His physical struggles were also a major concern. Djokovic appeared nauseous throughout the match and experienced problems similar to those he faced at the Cincinnati Open two weeks earlier, where he was beaten by Argentina’s Thiago Tirante in another early exit.

Djokovic later revealed that he has been dealing with a recurring health issue in oppressive conditions for several years. He said the problem has affected him during matches throughout the year, resulting in vomiting and eventually causing his body to break down.

The player explained that the condition can lead to cramping, pain and weakness, adding that his back and shoulder eventually became too painful for him to continue fighting at the same level. Despite the setback, Djokovic’s fighting spirit was evident as he pushed through the physical difficulties and extended the match to five sets before Navone secured one of the biggest victories of his career.
