Wellness without the high cost, simple habits to try

Wellness does not need to involve expensive retreats or luxury experiences, with simple hobbies and community activities offering affordable alternatives.

London: Low-cost wellness habits are gaining attention as people look for practical ways to support physical and mental well-being without expensive memberships or luxury retreats.

Wellness is often associated with high-priced spa visits, retreats and specialised experiences. However, health experts and well-being advocates have highlighted a range of affordable activities that can support a healthy body, mind and lifestyle.

One option is joining wellness-focused meet-ups. Studio memberships can be costly, leading more people to organise free or affordable gatherings based around activities that support well-being. Local groups can often be found through community networks, social platforms and services such as Meetup.

Gardening is another accessible activity linked to physical and mental well-being. Research by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has found that people who garden every day report higher well-being and lower stress levels.

A private garden is not essential, many local councils offer allotments where residents can rent a plot for a relatively small annual fee. Community gardens can also provide opportunities to spend time outdoors, meet new people and develop practical skills.

Older hobbies are also attracting new interest as people search for inexpensive ways to improve well-being. Birdwatching, for example, may require little more than a visit to a local park.

Research has suggested that 30 minutes of birdwatching can increase happiness, improve well-being and help people feel more connected to nature. Local birdwatching groups and communities can also offer a social element to the activity.

Crochet is another hobby returning to popularity. Getting started can cost only a few pounds, with a hook and ball of yarn providing the basic equipment needed.

Research has linked crochet with improved well-being. Participants have reported that the activity helped with stress, grief, chronic illness and other life challenges, showing that everyday wellness does not always require a large financial commitment.
