Sam Altman’s anime avatar sparks buzz following AI praise for India

New Delhi: India’s cricket obsession has caught the attention of AI chatbot ChatGPT and its creator, Sam Altman.

When Altman prompted the AI with “Sam Altman as a cricket player in anime style,” the result was an image of him wielding a bat while donning a bright blue India jersey.

He shared the AI-generated image on X (formerly Twitter), sparking widespread reaction across Indian social media.

Altman has previously engaged with viral AI art trends, including the recent trending Studio Ghibli-style images. But this post, showing him in India’s iconic cricket colors, stood out and ignited speculation. Some users saw it as a fun gesture, while others suspected deeper motives.

This post came just hours after Altman praised India’s AI adoption on X, calling it “amazing to watch” and saying the country is “outpacing the world.” That message also went viral in India, prompting a wave of media coverage and a Reddit thread asking, “Can someone tell me what Sam Altman is talking about here in his tweet?”

Just days earlier, Altman had retweeted anime-style images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside former U.S. President Donald Trump. The images, posted by the Indian government’s citizen engagement platform, MyGov India, added to growing curiosity about Altman’s visible focus on India.

The attention hasn’t gone unnoticed—and it’s raised eyebrows because of Altman’s previous comments during a 2023 visit to India. Back then, he was skeptical of small Indian startups trying to build foundational AI models.

When asked whether a small, smart team with a $10 million budget could rival OpenAI, Altman responded it would be “totally hopeless,” though he encouraged entrepreneurs to try anyway.

In contrast, his 2025 visit reflected a sharp shift. During a meeting with Indian federal minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in February, Altman expressed interest in working with India to build low-cost AI models. He praised the country’s swift AI adoption and revealed that India had become OpenAI’s second-largest market, with its user base tripling over the past year.

Despite this praise, OpenAI is currently facing legal challenges from major Indian media houses over alleged unauthorized use of their content.

Experts suggest Altman’s evolving interest in India likely stems from its market potential. According to the International Trade Administration, India’s AI market is projected to reach $8bn by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 40% between 2020 and 2025.

Altman’s cricket-themed anime image, playful as it may seem, fits into a larger pattern of outreach to Indian users—many of whom are now wondering whether this sudden engagement is part of a broader business strategy.
