Italy: Italy has won the Davis Cup title for 2nd time after beating Australia 2-0 in the final.
Matteo Arnaldi, the 22-year-old player, won 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 against Alexei Popyrin, giving Italy the initial point. Then, less than twenty-four hours after defeating Novak Djokovic twice in a single day, Jannik Sinner once again showed strong determination as he defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0 to cap off the finest two weeks of his career.
“This is a really important win for me and for the whole team and Italy together, no? We felt the pressure. We had a lot of responsibility. But still we managed. We stand up for it. We were excited. Obviously, everyone is really happy about the end result.” Sinner remarked.
Due to Sinner’s dominance and that of the Australian doubles team, the match was decided by a difficult opening encounter that both teams had to win. Popyrin and Arnaldi, two younger players who haven’t cracked the top 35, were thrown into a huge situation for which they hadn’t been prepared in their careers, as per the statement.
Arnaldi’s unwavering persistence and stubbornness helped him win the match. Throughout the third set, the Italian was utterly outmatched, facing break points in four of his five service games, for a total of eight. From a 15–30 deficit, he had the easiest hold of the entire set as the Australian cruised through his own service games.
Italy won their second title in the top men’s team competition back in 1976, as per the report.
