Following a phenomenal year for movies that saw Barbie and Oppenheimer rule the box office, the 2024 Oscar nominations will be revealed within hours.

When the nominations are revealed at 13:30 GMT, Poor Things, The Holdovers, and Killers of the Flower Moon are also anticipated to be prominently featured.

It’s likely that Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr., and Cillian Murphy will receive acting nominations.

This year’s Oscars are much more accessible than usual thanks to the Barbenheimer phenomenon, a viral trend that saw thousands of fans purchase tickets to see both movies on the same day last summer.

Although a number of Academy Awards presentations in recent years have honoured movies that didn’t exactly take off with the public, producers are hoping that Barbie and Oppenheimer’s probable inclusion will spark a wave of interest and viewers.

The best picture category now has a guaranteed 10 slots available, following a rule change a few years ago meant to broaden the field.

Most people predict that Barbie, Poor Things, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and The Holdovers will all receive nominations.

The films Anatomy of a Fall, Maestro, The Zone of Interest, Past Lives, and American Fiction are also anticipated to be strong contenders for the Academy’s highest honour.

However, a number of other films, including May December, Society of the Snow, All of Us Strangers, and The Colour Purple, are strong candidates that could easily earn nominations in the top category.
