Ankara: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to urge NATO allies to provide additional air defence systems during the alliance’s summit in Turkey, saying stronger protection is urgently needed as Russia intensifies missile attacks across Ukraine. The request comes after recent strikes on Kyiv killed dozens of civilians and caused widespread destruction.
Zelensky is also expected to meet US President Donald Trump during the summit to discuss military support and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. Ukrainian officials argue that the recent escalation in Russian attacks demonstrates the need for increased international pressure on Moscow and stronger defensive capabilities for Ukraine.
The appeal follows two major missile attacks on Kyiv within a week, with Russian strikes damaging residential buildings and critical infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities say the latest attacks underline the growing threat posed by ballistic missiles, which remain difficult to intercept without advanced air defence systems.

While Ukraine has increased long-range drone attacks on military and energy facilities inside Russia, officials say the country still lacks enough Patriot missile systems to defend against high-speed ballistic missiles. Daily military reports show that although many drones are intercepted, ballistic missile interceptions remain a significant challenge.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has called on alliance members to increase support for Ukraine and ensure the country receives the military equipment needed to defend its sovereignty. The summit is expected to focus heavily on strengthening Ukraine’s air defences and maintaining support amid continued Russian offensives.
Zelensky has described the shortage of air defence systems as a critical security issue, saying current production levels are insufficient to protect civilians from ongoing missile attacks. Ukraine hopes the summit will result in concrete commitments from allies as the conflict enters another intense phase.
