New York: Major US carriers have raised baggage fees in response to a sharp increase in jet fuel prices driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Airlines have pointed to volatility in oil markets as a key factor behind the decision to increase charges for passengers.
Delta Air Lines has followed similar moves by United Airlines and JetBlue, all of which have announced higher baggage fees in recent days. The adjustments have come as jet fuel prices have nearly doubled since the escalation of conflict involving Iran earlier this year.
Industry data has shown that the average cost of jet fuel has risen from $2.50 (£1.98) per gallon in late February to $4.81 (£3.81), significantly increasing operational expenses for airlines. The surge has been linked to disruptions caused by tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.
Airlines have also faced additional costs due to longer flight routes required to avoid conflict zones, leading to increased fuel consumption. These combined factors have placed further financial strain on carriers, prompting the rise in baggage fees.

Despite the cost pressures, Delta Air Lines has projected strong financial performance, expecting a pre-tax profit of around $1 billion (£790 million) for the quarter ending in June. The airline has also reported record revenue of $15.9 billion (£12.56 billion) for the March quarter.
Ed Bastian, Chief Executive Officer of Delta, has stated that the company has delivered earnings significantly higher than the previous year, even amid rising fuel costs and operational disruptions.
The increase in baggage fees has reflected a broader trend across the aviation industry, where airlines are adjusting pricing strategies to manage rising expenses linked to fuel and geopolitical risks.
Market analysts have indicated that further adjustments may occur if fuel prices remain elevated, with airlines continuing to balance profitability and consumer demand. The situation has highlighted how global conflicts can directly influence airline costs, with passengers ultimately facing higher charges as carriers respond to market conditions.
