Hong Kong: Typhoon Noul has made landfall in southern China, bringing heavy rain and gale-force winds that disrupted transport and forced mass evacuations across several coastal regions.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) raised the storm warning to Typhoon Signal No. 9 as the cyclone passed within 80 kilometres of the city. The alert was later lowered to Signal No. 8 at 07:10 am. HKO stated that Signal No. 8 would remain in place until at least noon, keeping most businesses and transport services suspended.

The storm struck Guangdong province early on June 22. Intense rainfall and strong winds spread across nearby regions, including Hong Kong. Authorities moved quickly as conditions worsened across coastal areas.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) reported widespread flight cancellations due to the storm. AAHK stated that operations would begin resuming gradually after 6:00 p.m. as weather conditions improve. The disruptions affected passenger movement across the region, causing delays and travel uncertainty.

In mainland China, authorities confirmed that more than 340,000 people in Guangdong province have been relocated. Emergency measures focused on reducing risks in coastal and low-lying areas. The storm, named after a Korean word meaning the glow of sunrise or sunset, marks the 12th tropical cyclone this year and the third to hit China in the same month.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds have continued to affect infrastructure and daily life. Transport disruption extended beyond aviation and impacted business activity across Hong Kong. Weather agencies continue monitoring the storm’s path, while emergency teams remain deployed and authorities assess damage as the system weakens inland.
