Trump signals Iran talks may resume as blockade continues

This development has raised cautious optimism for diplomacy despite ongoing tensions and a US naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.

Washington: The possibility of renewed Iran talks has emerged after Donald Trump suggested negotiations with Tehran could restart within days. The remarks have come after earlier talks in Islamabad failed to produce an agreement.

Trump has indicated that discussions could resume soon, signalling a potential diplomatic opening even as the United States continues enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. The operation has been aimed at increasing pressure on Iran following the collapse of negotiations.

The Iran talks are being closely watched as the blockade has disrupted maritime activity. According to US Central Command, no vessels have passed through Iranian ports during the first 24 hours of enforcement, although some ships have reportedly altered routes.

The blockade has involved US warships and thousands of military personnel, targeting key revenue sources for Iran, including oil exports and shipping tolls. The move has raised concerns about the stability of a two-week ceasefire, which is due to expire soon.

JD Vance, who led negotiations in Pakistan, has stated that Iran appears willing to reach a deal despite ongoing mistrust between the two sides. Diplomatic sources have suggested that both delegations could return to Pakistan for further discussions, although no timeline has been confirmed.

The Iran talks have also drawn attention from global leaders. António Guterres has indicated that it is highly probable negotiations will resume, reflecting growing international pressure for de-escalation.

The situation has had immediate effects on global markets, with oil prices easing amid hopes of renewed dialogue. However, the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical concern, as disruptions continue to affect global energy flows.

Meanwhile, China has criticised the blockade, warning that it could escalate tensions and undermine the fragile ceasefire. Economic concerns have also been raised, with the International Monetary Fund cautioning that the conflict could impact global growth.

The outcome of the Iran talks will be crucial in determining whether tensions ease or escalate further, as both sides weigh diplomatic options against ongoing military measures.

The coming days are expected to be decisive, with potential negotiations offering a path toward stabilising the region and restoring global energy confidence.
