Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canada as trade tensions escalate

The new tariffs target a wide range of Canadian goods, while Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa will step up trade negotiations with Washington.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping 50 per cent tariffs on a broad range of Canadian imports, marking a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the two neighbouring countries. The new duties, which the White House said will take effect in 30 days, target consumer and industrial products while exempting several key Canadian exports.

According to the White House, the tariffs apply to goods including wine, alcoholic beverages, hockey sticks, cement and other manufactured products. However, major exports such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish will remain exempt. Trump said the move was prompted by what he described as Canada’s ‘unequal treatment’ of US products, particularly in the automotive, dairy and alcohol sectors.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying his government was prepared to ‘intensify’ trade negotiations with the United States in the coming weeks. In a statement posted on X, Carney stated that the latest tariffs were another unilateral trade action that violated the spirit of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (USMCA).

The latest measures add to existing trade barriers already imposed by both countries. The United States currently maintains tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium, copper, softwood lumber and certain automotive products, while Canada continues to impose 25 per cent counter-tariffs on selected American imports, including steel, aluminium and vehicles.

The White House also confirmed that the new tariffs will apply regardless of whether products qualify for preferential treatment under the USMCA free trade agreement. The action follows months of strained relations between Washington and Ottawa since Trump’s return to office in January 2025, with disputes expanding beyond traditional trade issues.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Canada to respond firmly if the tariffs proceed, calling for ‘tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar.’ The latest announcement raises fresh uncertainty for businesses and manufacturers on both sides of the border as negotiations continue over one of North America’s most significant trading relationships.
