London, UK: A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently underway in the mid-Atlantic after a tourist submarine disappeared during a dive into the wreck of the Titanic on 19th June 2023. The US Coast Guard reported that contact with the small sub was lost approximately one hour and 45 minutes into the dive. OceanGate, the tour firm operating the submarine, stated that all possible options were being explored to rescue the five individuals on board.

Tickets for the eight-day trip, which includes dives to the Titanic wreck at a depth of 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), cost $250,000 (£195,000). Government agencies, along with the US and Canadian navies and commercial deep-sea firms, are assisting in the rescue operation. Despite the wreck lying about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland, the mission is being coordinated from Boston, Massachusetts.

The missing submarine is believed to be OceanGate’s Titan submersible, a truck-sized vessel designed to accommodate five people and equipped with a four-day emergency supply of oxygen. Rear Admiral Mr. John Mauger of the US Coast Guard stated during a news conference that there were an estimated 70 to 96 hours available for the rescue efforts.

The search for the vessel involves two aircraft, a submarine, and sonar buoys. However, the remote location of the search area poses challenges to the operation. Rear Admiral Mr. Mauger expressed the personal commitment of the rescue teams to bring the individuals on board back home safely.

Among those on the missing submarine is Mr. Hamish Harding, a 58-year-old British billionaire businessman and explorer. OceanGate expressed its primary focus on the well-being of the crew members and their families and expressed gratitude for the extensive assistance received from various government agencies and deep-sea companies.

OceanGate’s expedition offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the depths outside of their everyday lives. Currently, one expedition is in progress, and two more have been scheduled for June 2024, according to the company’s website.
