Taiwan: The Taiwan war games have examined military defence and communication resilience as forces trained to repel a Chinese assault and control mobile internet access.
The exercise forms part of the annual Han Kuang drills, which began on August 5, 2026, and runs for 10 days to prepare for potential conflict scenarios involving China. Military units have staged a pre-dawn operation on Penghu Islands, a strategically important location in the Taiwan Strait.
The forces deployed M60A3 tanks along with artillery and anti-aircraft systems. The drills simulates a rapid coastal landing by opposing forces. The military describes the response as a layered defence strategy designed to counter an amphibious assault.
Penghu remains a critical point in Taiwan’s defence planning. Strategists identifies the islands as a possible early target in any conflict scenario. Control of Penghu could allow opposing forces to launch further strikes using missiles and drones against Taiwan’s main island.
In central Taiwan, authorities carried out a separate civil defence exercise focuses on communication systems. The government slowed mobile internet speeds for the first time during such drills. The measure tested how residents and emergency services operate under limited bandwidth conditions.
Essential services remaines unaffected during the test, ATM networks continued to function and the traffic signals operated normally. Emergency ambulance services also remained fully accessible. Landline and fixed internet connections were not disrupted.
The same communication exercise is scheduled to take place in northern Taiwan, including Taipei, on August 13, 2026. Authorities aims to assess nationwide readiness under constrained digital conditions. Taiwan’s government continued to reject China’s sovereignty claims over the island. Officials have maintained that the future of Taiwan must be determined by its own population.
