A significant portion of people’s daily lives is devoted to medicines, but they also come with their fair share of side effects. Identifying the side effects of the medicines you are taking is essential to ensuring your health and safety. Even though medications are meant to treat certain conditions or symptoms, they can also carry unintended effects on the body.

To properly identify and manage any medication side effects, start by thoroughly reading the medication label and patient information leaflet that comes with the medication packaging or is provided by the pharmacist. Make sure to focus on the sections that cover ‘Side Effects’ or ‘Adverse Reactions,’ as these typically list the most common and potentially serious side effects that are associated with the medication. Pay close attention to any specific instructions or precautions that are mentioned, such as avoiding certain foods, beverages, or activities while taking the medication.

It’s important to be aware of the potential side effects of any medication you take. Common side effects vary depending on the type of medication. For example, antibiotics may cause nausea, diarrhea, or allergic reactions, while pain relievers may cause stomach upset or drowsiness. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the potential side effects of your medication.

The most significant part to note is that some side effects caused by medication may only be temporary and can resolve on their own as your body adjusts. However, other side effects may persist or worsen over time and require medical attention.

It is essential to closely monitor any changes in your symptoms or how you feel after starting a new medication. People should keep a record of any new or unusual symptoms, even if they seem minor initially. You should be alert to both physical and psychological symptoms, as medicines can affect various factors of your health and well-being.

People should be aware of the symptoms that may occur while taking medication. Severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, hives or a rash are the most common and initial signs that we can see. More severe signs that require attention include chest pain, palpitations, an irregular heartbeat, severe headaches, dizziness, or confusion.

Medication side effects can also affect communication skills such as hearing or speech, as well as cause sudden vision changes. Other symptoms to watch out for include unexplained bruising or bleeding, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or diarrhea, and suicidal thoughts or behaviour. It is essential to pay attention to any of these symptoms throughout your medication and consult your physician for proper care.
