Oslo, Norway: Hvaldimir, the beluga whale known for its unusual spy-like behavior, has been killed by gunshots. Animal rights groups have sparked outrage and calls for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Hvaldimir gained international attention in 2019 when he was discovered off the coast of Norway wearing a harness that appeared to be military-grade. This led to speculation that he might have been trained by the Russian military for espionage purposes. Despite his mysterious past, Hvaldimir was viewed by many as a symbol of the intersection between wildlife and geopolitical intrigue.
According to reports, Hvaldimir was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds, a revelation that has shocked and saddened wildlife advocates. The community is condemning the act as a rigorous violation of animal welfare and is calling for a thorough investigation to determine who is responsible for this heinous act.
“The injuries on the whale are alarming and of a nature that cannot rule out a criminal act – it is shocking,” NOAH Director Siri Martinsen said in a statement. “Given the suspicion of a criminal act, it is crucial that the police are involved quickly,” Martinsen added.
Animal rights organizations are urging authorities to take swift action, emphasizing that such violence against wildlife not only undermines ethical standards but also poses a threat to conservation efforts. They stress the need for stronger protections for animals, especially those caught in the crossfire of human conflicts.
Hvaldimir was relatively young for a beluga whale with an estimated age of about 20, which typically lives upto 30 to 35 years, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
