Dallas: Cristiano Ronaldo’s remarkable FIFA World Cup journey came to an emotional end after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16. A dramatic stoppage-time goal from Mikel Merino sent Spain into the quarter-finals and ended the 41-year-old forward’s final World Cup campaign.

Ronaldo had already confirmed that the 2026 tournament would be the last World Cup of an international career filled with records and achievements. The Portugal captain left the field in tears after the final whistle, bringing the curtain down on six World Cup appearances spanning two decades.

Portugal created opportunities but failed to find the breakthrough against a disciplined Spanish side. The decisive moment came deep into injury time when Mikel Merino scored the winning goal, leaving Portugal with no chance to respond. Spain advanced to the quarter-finals, while Portugal’s campaign came to a painful end.

The defeat also marked the end of Roberto Martinez’s spell as Portugal coach. Martinez confirmed after the match that the tournament was the final assignment in charge and praised Ronaldo for the commitment shown throughout the competition, describing the veteran forward as an inspiration on and off the pitch.

Ronaldo finished the tournament with three goals and added another chapter to an extraordinary international career. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner remains the highest goalscorer in men’s international football and became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups.

Although Ronaldo’s World Cup dream ended without lifting the trophy, the Portugal captain leaves behind one of football’s greatest international legacies. The future of the veteran striker at international level remains uncertain, with a final decision expected after discussions with family following the tournament.
