Chengdu: Torrential rains have killed 10 people across Southwest China and forced thousands of residents to leave vulnerable areas as authorities warned of growing disaster risks. The severe weather brought renewed attention to the region’s exposure to extreme rainfall during the summer months.

Disaster prevention authorities evacuated 21,784 people after heavy rain struck several parts of the region. Chengdu and Zigong were among the affected areas as intense rainfall disrupted communities and increased concerns over flooding and landslides. Emergency measures were introduced in vulnerable locations as authorities worked to reduce risks to residents.

In Changning County in Sichuan, 3 people died at a home during the severe weather. Another 2 people later died in hospital, where 17 injured people were receiving treatment. Authorities have not clarified whether the reported death toll included any children or young people.

The remaining deaths occurred elsewhere in the affected region, bringing the total number of fatalities linked to the torrential rains to 10. Emergency and disaster prevention efforts continued as authorities monitored conditions in areas exposed to further heavy rainfall. Local authorities remains alert to the possibility of additional weather-related incidents.

Officials had earlier warned that loose sand and gravel in high mountain canyon areas could trigger landslides. The unstable terrain raises concerns that continued rain could cause further disasters in communities located near steep slopes and mountain valleys. Such conditions can become particularly dangerous when heavy rainfall weakens already unstable ground.

Since the start of summer, Guangxi and other parts of southwest China received periods of heavy rain. Sichuan authorities issued a heavy rain alert this week and warned residents about possible disaster risks as severe weather continued across the region. The warning highlights the need for continued monitoring as rainfall affects vulnerable communities.
