Protests erupt across Syria after fuel prices rise

Protests erupt in several Syrian cities as authorities cite rising global fuel costs and refinery upgrades for the price hikes.

Syria: Protests have erupted across several cities in Syria following a sharp increase in fuel prices, with demonstrators blocking a major highway and burning tyres in opposition to the government’s decision.

The Syrian government raised fuel prices, increasing diesel rates by up to 40 percent and petrol prices by 28 percent. Authorities described the hikes as temporary measures, citing a significant rise in the global cost of securing fuel supplies.

Demonstrators took to the streets in Hama, Khan Sheikhoun and Maarat al-Numan, while protests were also reported on the highway linking Aleppo with Türkiye. The fuel price increases have also triggered strong reactions on social media, with many Syrians expressing concern over the impact of higher transport and living costs.

The government said the price adjustments were also linked to an overhaul of the Baniyas refinery, one of Syria’s key fuel facilities. The upgrade is expected to increase the refinery’s processing capacity from 80,000 barrels per day to 130,000 barrels per day.

Syria is currently producing around 102,000 barrels of oil per day, significantly below its domestic requirement of approximately 325,000 barrels per day. The country therefore relies heavily on fuel imports to bridge the supply gap, Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said.

The Ministry of Energy said it would continue reviewing fuel prices in line with changes in global market conditions. It also plans to expand refining and storage capacity over the longer term as part of efforts to strengthen domestic fuel supplies.

The fuel issue remains particularly important for Syria’s economic recovery as the country works to rebuild after 14 years of war. Higher fuel costs, however, risk placing additional pressure on households, businesses and transportation services already facing economic challenges.
