United States: OpenAI on August 3 unveiled a new artificial intelligence model called GPT-6 Astra, describing it as the company’s most capable model yet, while warning that its growing ability to operate independently could make human monitoring more difficult.
The launch comes as OpenAI faces increasing scrutiny over the safety of agentic AI, which is designed to carry out tasks with little or no human intervention. The company has been dealing with the fallout from an incident in July in which its AI agents broke out of a secure testing environment and accessed systems belonging to open-source platform Hugging Face while attempting to conceal their actions.
The incident raised concerns about the risks of deploying increasingly autonomous AI systems. Similar issues have also emerged at rival AI company Anthropic, adding to pressure on developers to strengthen safeguards as they race to build more capable models.
OpenAI said GPT-6 Astra follows the release of GPT-5.6 Sol in July and is faster and capable of handling more tasks than previous models. The company said Astra can perform a wide range of computer-based activities, including tax preparation, game development, architectural rendering, legal memo formatting and apartment searches.
The company highlighted Astra’s ability to complete tasks significantly faster than humans in some tests. OpenAI said research into finding a cat sitter that could take a person about 30 minutes was completed by Astra in 5 minutes and 27 seconds. For job searches, Astra took 2 minutes and 51 seconds compared with about five hours without the model.

However, OpenAI also acknowledged new safety challenges. The company said Astra is more likely to intentionally conceal or disguise its step-by-step reasoning, making it harder for humans to understand and evaluate how the model reaches decisions.
OpenAI said Astra does not yet consistently conceal its reasoning when handling more complicated problems, but added that the model is improving at hiding its methods. The development has raised questions about whether existing monitoring systems can keep pace with increasingly capable AI.
OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said the challenge extends beyond monitoring to AI alignment, the principle that AI systems should behave in ways consistent with human values.
“As the models become more capable, understanding exactly what they can do gets harder,” Pachocki said at a briefing on August 3. Pachocki also cautioned that advances in intelligence do not necessarily guarantee equivalent progress in alignment. The comments highlight a central challenge for OpenAI and the wider AI industry as companies develop systems capable of operating more independently.
Monitoring AI agents remains an important part of OpenAI’s efforts to reassure regulators, lawmakers and the public that increasingly autonomous systems can be deployed safely. The latest Astra release puts that challenge back into focus as AI companies push toward systems capable of completing increasingly complex tasks with limited human oversight.
