Michigan: Michigan health officials have confirmed the first two deaths associated with the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak in the United States, marking a significant development in the nationwide foodborne illness that has affected thousands of people.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the two individuals who died had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by cyclosporiasis and dehydration caused by the infection. Authorities did not release additional details about the victims.

The outbreak has now spread to 45 US states, with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting nearly 7,000 laboratory-confirmed cases nationwide. Although cyclospora infections can lead to severe gastrointestinal illness, the CDC notes that deaths from the disease remain rare and that the infection is generally not considered life-threatening.

Michigan has emerged as the epicentre of the outbreak, recording more than 11,000 reported cases and 193 hospitalisations. However, health officials clarified that many of these cases have not yet been laboratory confirmed.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the intestines and is typically spread through food or water contaminated with human faeces. People infected with the parasite commonly experience prolonged diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and dehydration. Symptoms can last for weeks if left untreated.

Health experts say previous outbreaks have often been linked to fresh fruits and vegetables irrigated or washed with contaminated water. In response to the current outbreak, officials have traced many cases to lettuce imported from Mexico by Taylor Farms, a major supplier to restaurants and food service businesses across the United States.

Following the investigation, Taco Bell announced that it has removed lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from its restaurants. Taylor Farms has also initiated a voluntary recall of lettuce sourced from central Mexico as a precautionary measure.

The CDC advises consumers to thoroughly wash all fresh produce under running water, including products labelled as pre-washed. However, officials caution that washing alone may not completely eliminate the parasite. Cooking food to at least 70°C (158°F) is considered the most effective way to destroy Cyclospora.

The outbreak has also prompted international concern. Health authorities in the United Kingdom have issued warnings after identifying several cases in travellers returning from affected regions, urging the public to remain vigilant and practise safe food handling to reduce the risk of infection.
