Las Vegas: Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the UFC ended in heartbreaking fashion after the Irish superstar suffered a serious knee injury just over a minute into his UFC 329 bout against Max Holloway at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor, a former two-division UFC champion, was competing for the first time since July 2021, when he sustained a broken leg during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier. Fans had eagerly awaited his comeback, but the contest came to an abrupt end after he attempted a flying kick early in the opening round.
The 37-year-old landed awkwardly, immediately showing signs of discomfort before attempting to continue. Moments later, McGregor signalled to the referee that he was unable to carry on, resulting in the fight being stopped due to injury.
Despite the disappointing conclusion, Holloway expressed his willingness to face McGregor again once the Irish fighter recovers. The fight marked the second meeting between the two fighters, with McGregor having defeated Holloway by unanimous decision in 2013.
McGregor’s career has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries and setbacks in recent years. After the devastating leg break against Poirier, he was scheduled to return against Michael Chandler in June 2024, but the bout was cancelled after he suffered a broken toe during training.
Away from the Octagon, McGregor has also faced significant legal and disciplinary issues. In late 2024, an Irish civil court found him liable in a case brought by Nikita Hand relating to an alleged rape in 2018. In October 2025, he accepted an 18-month suspension for multiple ‘whereabouts failures’ after missing anti-doping sample collection attempts in 2024. The ban was backdated and expired in March 2026, clearing the way for his return.
Meanwhile, the co-main event also ended in rapid fashion. Britain’s Paddy Pimblett secured an impressive victory by submitting France’s Benoit Saint-Denis with a chokehold in under a minute in their lightweight contest.
McGregor’s latest injury now raises fresh questions about the future of one of the UFC’s biggest global stars, with fans and the promotion awaiting medical assessments to determine the extent of the knee damage and whether another comeback will be possible.
