London: The latest data on UK airport delays has highlighted ongoing challenges across the country’s aviation network, with Manchester Airport recording the longest average delays among major airports.
According to analysis based on figures from the Civil Aviation Authority, flights departing from Manchester were delayed by an average of 19 minutes and 30 seconds over the past year. While this represents a slight improvement compared to the previous year, the airport still ranked as the worst in the UK for punctuality.
Other airports also reported notable delays. Birmingham Airport followed with an average delay of 18 minutes and 42 seconds, while Bournemouth Airport recorded delays of over 17 minutes.
Several major hubs, including Gatwick Airport and Stansted Airport, also featured in the list, indicating that delays are not limited to smaller regional airports. Despite these figures, the broader picture shows some improvement in UK airport delays.

The average delay across 23 commercial airports was recorded at 14 minutes and 54 seconds, down from over 18 minutes the previous year. This suggests that while delays remain a concern, operational efficiency may be gradually improving across the sector.
Industry representatives have pointed out that many of the factors contributing to delays are beyond the control of airports. Weather conditions, industrial action affecting air traffic control across Europe and airspace restrictions linked to global conflicts have all played a role in disrupting schedules.
Manchester Airport, one of the busiest in the country, has been handling high passenger volumes while undergoing infrastructure upgrades, including terminal redevelopment projects. These factors may have contributed to operational pressures, although improvements are expected over time.
Experts say that improving communication with passengers is crucial when delays occur, ensuring travelers are informed and supported. While progress has been made, the persistence of UK airport delays highlights the need for continued coordination across airlines, airports and air traffic management systems.
