Cupertino: Apple has announced that John Ternus will become its new chief executive, replacing Tim Cook after 15 years in the role. The transition is set to take effect on September 1, marking a significant moment in the company’s leadership history.

The Apple leadership change has come after months of speculation regarding succession planning. Ternus, who currently leads hardware engineering and has spent 25 years at the company, will take over day-to-day operations while Cook moves into the role of executive chairman.

Cook has led Apple since 2011, following the resignation of co-founder Steve Jobs. During this period, Apple has grown into one of the world’s most valuable companies, reaching a valuation of $4 trillion (£3.16 trillion).

The Apple transition is expected to include a handover period, with Cook remaining in his current role through the summer to ensure continuity. Cook has stated that Ternus is the right person to lead the company forward, highlighting his experience and leadership qualities.

Ternus has played a key role in the development of major Apple products, including multiple generations of the iPhone, iPad and Mac. He has also overseen the shift to Apple’s in-house silicon chips, a major technological milestone for the company.

The Apple decision to appoint a leader with a strong hardware background has been viewed as a strategic move. Analysts have suggested that this could signal a renewed focus on product innovation and differentiation.

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple has significantly expanded its global reach and profitability. However, the company has faced criticism for a perceived lack of breakthrough innovation compared to earlier years.

Industry observers have noted that the new leadership could influence Apple’s direction in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and wearable devices. Competitors such as Google and Microsoft have been investing heavily in these areas.

The Apple leadership shift has also raised expectations that the company may accelerate development in new product categories while maintaining its established ecosystem.

Ternus has expressed optimism about the future, indicating that the company will continue building on its strengths while exploring new opportunities. The transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Apple, as it seeks to balance innovation with its established global position in the technology industry.
