Kazakhstan: Dozens of people have survived a tragic crash involving Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, which was carrying 67 passengers and crew when it crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan. Local authorities notified that 38 individuals were killed in the incident.
The flight, which had departed from Baku, Azerbaijan, at 03:55 GMT on 25th December, was en route to Grozny, Russia, when it was diverted due to dense fog. The plane tried an emergency landing approximately 3 kilometres from Aktau but caught fire as it descended. The crash occurred around 06:28 GMT, and the aircraft descended rapidly with its landing gear deployed before bursting into flames on impact.
Authorities have launched an analysis into the cause of the crash. Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General confirmed that all possible scenarios are being examined, and officials are evaluating the possibility that the plane may have collided with a flock of birds. Meanwhile, some experts have suggested that the damage to the plane may be connected to an air defence missile detonation, though no official conclusions have been made.
The flight was carrying passengers predominantly from Azerbaijan, with others from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Among those on board was a woman travelling to spend the holidays with her children in Chechnya, who tragically died in the crash. A mother, who was travelling with medical tests for her sick child, remains missing.
Survivors of the crash were seen arising from the wreckage, some with visible injuries, as emergency services worked to extinguish the flames. The flight data recorder has been recovered, and authorities in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are coordinating efforts to determine the reason for the disaster.
Azerbaijan Airlines has discontinued flights between Baku and the Russian cities of Grozny and Makhachkala until the investigation is complete. The airline, alongside aircraft manufacturer Embraer, has pledged full cooperation with the authorities. As investigations continue, the people affected by the tragedy remain in the thoughts of many.
