Hong Kong: China has entered the peak flood season with forecasts of heavier and more frequent rainfall from late July to early August, putting northern regions at increased risk of flooding and landslides.
Weather experts have warned that rising temperatures are shifting the country’s rain belt westward and northward. The change has expanded humid and semi-humid climate zones while increasing the possibility of secondary disasters linked to urbanisation and infrastructure development.
The northern areas are expected to receive 20 percent to 50 percent more rainfall than usual from late July to early August. The increased precipitation has raised concerns over potential floods, flash floods and landslides in vulnerable regions.
The National Climate Centre stated that the critical flood season from mid-July to mid-August, known as Qixia Bashang, is expected to bring above-average rainfall to most parts of northern China, eastern Inner Mongolia and northeastern China. The centre has urged greater vigilance against flooding caused by intense rainfall.

A landslide in Pengshui County in southwest China after torrential rain has killed at least 8 people, while rescue teams have continued searching for up to 34 missing individuals. The incident occurred in an area known for its scenic landscapes, located about 270 kilometres from downtown Chongqing city.
The authorities have continued rescue operations as heavy rainfall increases the risk of further geological disasters in affected areas. Several regions have experienced severe downpours in recent weeks.
The National Climate Centre noted that some areas could face extreme downpours capable of triggering flash floods, urban waterlogging and landslides. The risks have increased as heavy rainfall patterns become more unpredictable across affected regions.
Parts of Liaoning province in northeastern China have already recorded more than double their normal rainfall levels this year. Authorities and weather experts have continued monitoring conditions as the peak flood period progresses and the threat of further weather-related incidents remains.
