Beijing: The Ministry of Commerce of China (MOFCOM) announced that China and the European Union have held intensive consultations on hybrid and electric vehicle trade, focusing on export quotas and ways to balance economic and trade concerns.

The discussions focused on market access for Chinese hybrid vehicles and the terms governing exports to the European market. The ministry stated that both sides had reached an understanding on export quotas and the treatment of Chinese companies under EU measures.

Under the arrangement, China’s export quota for hybrid vehicles will not be lower than the quotas allocated to imports from other sources. Both sides also agreed that EU measures should not specifically target Chinese products or discriminate against Chinese firms.

The consultations also covered adjustments to China’s hybrid vehicle export figures for 2025. According to MOFCOM, both sides agreed to raise the figure to help ensure export opportunities and support stable growth for Chinese enterprises.

The talks come as China and the EU seek to address trade-related concerns involving the automotive sector. Hybrid and electric vehicles have become an important part of discussions over access to markets and the treatment of manufacturers operating across borders.

The ministry’s statement indicated that the consultations covered both vehicle trade and the wider need to balance economic and commercial interests. The agreements described by China relate specifically to hybrid vehicle export quotas and the adjustment of the 2025 export figure.

The consultations mark a further effort by China and the EU to address trade concerns through discussions. The focus on non-discriminatory treatment and export opportunities highlights the importance both sides have placed on the conditions governing Chinese hybrid vehicle exports to the European market.
