Ghana: The Ghana national football team have appointed veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior men’s national team, just weeks before the start of the World Cup.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the appointment stating that Queiroz will immediately take charge of preparations for the tournament. GFA stated that, “The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.”
The 73-year-old tactician steps into the role following the departure of Otto Addo, who left the position 72 days before the World Cup after friendly defeats to Austria national football team and Germany national football team in March.

Queiroz recently parted ways with Oman national football team after the side failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament. Despite that setback, he brings a wealth of experience, having coached at four previous World Cups and now set for his fifth consecutive appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Queiroz previously led Portugal national football team to the round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and managed Iran national football team across three consecutive World Cup editions, securing three wins in 13 matches.
Born in Mozambique, the former goalkeeper has also held coaching roles with Egypt national football team, Japan national football team, Colombia national football team and South Africa national football team, as well as an earlier stint with Portugal in the 1990s.
Queiroz remarked that, “This is not just another job, it is a mission. I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of people.” The GFA noted that Queiroz was selected from more than 600 local and international applicants, citing his extensive World Cup experience as a decisive factor.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia national football team, England national football team and Panama national football team. As part of their build-up, the Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico national football team on May 22 and Wales national football team on June 2 in international friendlies.
