Los Angeles: Canada have reached the World Cup last 16 for the first time after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles. Stephen Eustaquio scored deep into stoppage time to seal a historic win and send the co-hosts into the knockout stage.
The match remained closely contested for long periods, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring opportunities. As extra time appeared inevitable, Eustaquio produced the decisive moment in the second minute of added time, firing a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the net.
The victory continued Canada’s impressive World Cup campaign after the team secured its first-ever tournament win with a 6-0 victory over Qatar earlier in the competition. The latest success also made Canada the first nation to book a place in the last 16, where the team will face either the Netherlands or Morocco.

Canada looked the more threatening side throughout the match. Moise Bombito came close with a header that was cleared off the goal line by Aubrey Modiba, while head coach Jesse Marsch believed his side should have been awarded a penalty following a challenge on Richie Laryea.
The introduction of Alphonso Davies added fresh energy to Canada’s attack, creating further opportunities for Jonathan David and Promise David. South Africa, meanwhile, managed only one shot on target and struggled to test the Canadian defence despite finishing second in Group A.
Canada’s late breakthrough rewarded a determined performance and marked another milestone in the nation’s football history. The World Cup victory eliminated South Africa and kept Canada’s memorable tournament run alive as preparations begin for the last 16.
