Darwin: Bangladesh have made history by securing their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil, defeating the hosts by nine wickets in the opening match of the series in Darwin on August 16. The landmark result came after four days of dominant cricket from the visitors.
Chasing a target of just 57 runs, Bangladesh reached the required total with one wicket down. Mominul Haque struck the winning boundary to trigger celebrations among the Bangladesh players and supporters at Marrara Oval.
The victory is regarded as one of the finest achievements in Bangladesh’s 26-year Test history. Australia entered the match as the world’s top-ranked Test team, but Bangladesh controlled the contest across batting, bowling and fielding.

Bangladesh had already established a commanding position after bowling Australia out for 198 in the first innings and responding with 426. Tanzid Hasan scored a maiden Test century, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65 to give Bangladesh a lead of 228 runs.
Australia showed some resistance in the second innings, led by Cameron Green, who scored 104 for his third Test century and first on home soil. However, Australia were eventually dismissed for 284, leaving Bangladesh with a modest target to complete the victory.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a crucial role with the ball, taking five wickets in Australia’s second innings after already making an important contribution with the bat. Miraz also dismissed Steve Smith for 44 and helped dismantle Australia’s middle and lower order.
Hasan Mahmud was another major contributor, taking six wickets in Australia’s first innings and finishing with nine wickets for the match. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Bangladesh’s victory came 23 years after Australia last hosted them for a Test series. The two sides had not met in a Test series in Australia since 2003, when Australia won 2-0.
The result puts Bangladesh 1-0 ahead in the two-Test series and gives the visitors an opportunity to secure a historic series victory. Australia, meanwhile, will have to regroup quickly after a defeat that captain Pat Cummins acknowledged came after his team was outplayed across all departments.
