Ariana Grande to take break after Eternal Sunshine Tour

This decision comes after years of public scrutiny surrounding the singer's physical appearance and health.

London: Ariana Grande has announced that she will step away from public appearances after concluding her Eternal Sunshine Tour next month and has withdrawn from the upcoming London revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George.

A representative for the 33-year-old American singer stated that Grande will be “taking a step back from visibility” once the tour ends. The decision comes after years of what the representative described as ‘endless, ongoing public scrutiny,’ particularly surrounding the singer’s physical appearance and health.

Ariana Grande had been due to star opposite her Wicked co-star, British actor Jonathan Bailey, in the 2027 production at London’s Barbican Theatre. Following the announcement, Empire Street Productions, the company behind the revival of Sondheim’s acclaimed 1984 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, confirmed that she would no longer be part of the cast.

In a statement, the production company noted that it fully understood and supported Grande’s decision, acknowledging that it could not have been an easy choice and wishing her well. The show will continue as planned, although a replacement for Grande has not yet been announced.

Public speculation about Ariana Grande’s appearance has intensified in recent years and gained renewed attention following the release of her latest album, Petal, two days ago, as well as the promotional material accompanying the project.

Her representative stressed that Grande is looking forward to completing the Eternal Sunshine Tour “on a high note, both healthily and happily,” before taking a well-earned break from public-facing work. They also emphasised that the tour is physically demanding, requiring significant athleticism, and added that the singer has continued to perform at a high level throughout the schedule.

The final show of the Eternal Sunshine Tour is scheduled to take place in London on September 1.

The conversation surrounding Ariana Grande’s appearance has also been fuelled by the music video for her latest single, Petal, from the album of the same name. In the video, she portrays a performer who is repeatedly criticised during auditions, being told she is ‘not good enough,’ ‘desperate,’ and alternately criticised for needing cosmetic work and for allegedly having had ‘too much work done.’

The American Singer ultimately confronts her critics in a symbolic climax by taking a chainsaw to them, a scene widely interpreted as a commentary on relentless public judgment.
