Florida: Argentina has won a record 16th Copa America title by beating Colombia 1-0. The final was tumultuous, delayed 80 minutes by disturbances outside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

Lautaro Martinez secured victory goal in the second half of extra time, on Giovani lo Celso’s assist. Captain Lionel Messi, emotional after suffering an injury mid-game, celebrated his country’s third consecutive major tournament win at the final whistle.

Kick-off was delayed as ticketless fans attempted to enter the stadium, leading to clashes with police and several arrests. Additionally, a 25-minute halftime was necessitated by a concert on the pitch by Colombian pop star Shakira.

Despite hot and humid conditions, the match saw few clear opportunities, with Jhon Cordoba hitting the woodwork for Colombia in the first half. Argentina thought they had scored late in the game, only for Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal to be disallowed for offside.

Martinez emerged as the hero, securing the win and claiming the Golden Boot with five tournament goals. For Lionel Messi, this victory marks his first senior international tournament win and third major title in three years following the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup.

Argentina’s victory serves as a fitting farewell for Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, in what is expected to be his final international tournament. The winning also saw Argentina surpass Uruguay’s 15 Copa titles. Additionally, the final match marked the end of Angel di Maria’s international career, while defender Nicolas Otamendi is also set to retire from international football.

In a tournament marked by off-field controversies and emotional highs, the final in Miami left a lasting impression on players and fans alike, reflecting both the glory and challenges of South American football.
