San Francisco: Anthropic has released Claude Fable 5, a public-facing version of its highly advanced artificial intelligence model Claude Mythos, despite earlier concerns that the technology was too powerful for widespread deployment.

The announcement marks a significant milestone in the rapidly evolving AI industry. Claude Mythos, first introduced to a limited group of organisations in April for testing and evaluation, generated considerable attention among technology leaders, financial institutions, and government agencies due to its unprecedented capabilities.

At the time of its preview release, Anthropic warned that Mythos possessed advanced reasoning and autonomous operation abilities that could potentially be misused to exploit vulnerabilities in computer systems. The company limited access to selected organisations while evaluating the model’s potential risks and benefits.

Now, Anthropic says Claude Fable 5 will be available to the public with built-in safeguards and usage restrictions designed to reduce security risks. The company stated that, “Fable’s capabilities exceed those of any model we’ve ever made generally available,” while acknowledging that releasing a model this capable comes with risks.

Concerns over AI power and security

The release has reignited discussions about the growing power of artificial intelligence and the challenges of regulating increasingly capable systems.

When Mythos was first introduced, experts raised concerns that its advanced abilities could pose cybersecurity and financial security threats if used maliciously. The model’s capacity to operate independently on assigned tasks for extended periods has been highlighted as one of its most significant advancements.

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne previously described the concerns surrounding Mythos as justified, noting that the greatest challenge lies in understanding the ‘unknown unknowns’ associated with emerging AI technologies.

Anthropic reported that organisations testing Mythos have collectively identified more than 10,000 critical security vulnerabilities within their own systems using the AI model, demonstrating both its potential value and its powerful capabilities.

    Expanded access for selected organisations

Alongside the public release of Fable 5, Anthropic announced that approximately 150 organisations that previously tested Mythos will receive access to Claude Mythos 5, a version with fewer restrictions in areas such as cybersecurity and biological research, depending on approved use cases.

The company stated that access remains limited to a small group of cybersecurity professionals and infrastructure providers, but plans are underway to broaden availability through a trusted access programme.

AI industry growth fuels investor interest

The launch comes as Anthropic moves closer to becoming a publicly traded company. Industry analysts estimate the firm’s private valuation is approaching $1 trillion, making it one of the most valuable AI companies in the world.

Demonstrating increasingly sophisticated AI capabilities is expected to strengthen investor confidence and reinforce the company’s position in the highly competitive artificial intelligence market.

    Calls for AI safety measures

Despite celebrating the model’s capabilities, Anthropic executives continue to emphasise the importance of safety and oversight. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark warned that AI development is progressing at an extraordinary pace and argued that society should have mechanisms to slow advancement when necessary.

As AI systems become increasingly autonomous and capable, the release of Claude Fable 5 is expected to intensify global discussions about innovation, regulation, and the balance between technological progress and public safety.
